Building a Better Workplace through Motivation
People spend a considerable part of their lives at work, so it is not surprising that they expect to be rewarded and satisfied with the job that they do. Motivation deals with why people behave in certain ways as well as what drives them towards those paths- both good and bad ones.
Understanding what motivates people is important in the workplace. Research suggests that motivated employees are happier at work, and they get more satisfaction from their job as well. They tend to be absent less often because being productive makes them happy; plus when you’re feeling great about how your day’s going it becomes easier not only for yourself but other coworkers too which means better relationships all around – we hope this helps motivate some of y’all today (and every other Monday).
They are five keys in motivating the employees in a workplace. The first important workplace motivator for employees is communication. Most businesses don’t really consider the meaning of communication in their workplace, but it’s something that should be looked at closely. Increasing your employees’ ability to communicate with each other will allow for a more cohesive team and better relationships between people on staff–which can only help business success. Essentially, it’s all about opening up lines of dialogue. I’m a big believer that the more a team converses and interacts with each other, the better their performance will be.
The second key in motivating employees is offering challenging work. By challenging your employees with tasks that push them outside of their comfort zone, you help create a team that isn’t afraid to take on new challenges. When your employees are given tasks that ask difficult questions, they might hesitate at first but by providing them with the support needed for success you’ll see the delight in their eyes when they achieve something. It is not uncommon for people to be addicted to workplace satisfaction. Once your team has a taste of surpassing expectations, they won’t want to stop. Challenging your employees keeps their roles interesting and dynamic and helps to reduce the chance of them stagnating in the workplace. In the end, a challenged employee is an engaged employee. If you want your employees to be self-motivating, it’s a good idea to provide them with more responsibility and meaningful work. If an employee or team is suffering from a lack of engagement, give them challenging tasks that will increase the value they feel in their job offer. This is one way to motivate staff members and inspire motivation.
The third is that recognizing achievement. One of the best motivators out there for an employee is recognition. It might seem obvious, but actually giving your employees praise for their achievements can make them feel valued and motivate them even more in what they do at work. Recognizing achievement ties into challenging your employees but this method takes it one step further. Raising the bar in a workplace is all well and good when you’re able to praise them on occasion, but if not then your team will grow dissatisfied with their work environment which leaves them under-appreciated as workers for the company. By rewarding your staff, you help to fulfill the needs of their desired experience and make it more enjoyable. The goal is not just about receiving a gift or prize; this type of company culture rewards should include recognition for good performance in order to create an environment centered on making people feel valued as employees – which benefits everyone. Recognition and rewards don’t have to be delivered on an individual basis. A great way to inspire your employees is by announcing team prizes for good work, which will motivate them even more. Your workers are much more likely to be helpful with each other if they know that their performance contributes in some way towards a collective goal- both personal successes, as well as failures, count when it comes down to victory or defeat because teamwork makes us strong. If you’re already recognizing achievement in your business but not seeing the benefits, consider whether you’re clearly demonstrating what the reward is for. By ensuring that you recap exactly what has been achieved you give a clear indication to your team as to exactly what they need to do in order to be recognized.
Fourth, boosting team spirit. When employees are happy in their role, the team is much more likely to work together towards a common goal. This creates an environment where everyone has positive interactions with one another and can feel valued as they do so. According to Harvard Business Review, “close work friendships boost employee satisfaction by 50%” and “people with a best friend at work are seven times more likely to engage fully in their work”. It seems that the ones who get along best at work are more motivated to perform well. When employees care about each other, they in turn take an interest in their team and company; it is clear then how much better relationships between coworkers can impact someone’s performance on a job.
Lastly, the key to motivating employees is increasing independence. Allowing your workers autonomy in their roles is a proven way of increasing motivation, loyalty, and engagement. It has been established that giving employees the freedom to do what they need when it comes down to each individual task increases job satisfaction greatly as well as makes them more productive than ever before. Joan Cheverie, Director of EDUCAUSE Institute Programs, had this to say, “autonomy is people’s need to perceive that they have choices, that what they are doing is of their own volition, and that they are the source of their own actions.” Instead of micromanaging your employees, give them the independence and self-motivation to perform at their best. By doing so you create a culture where members are motivated by performance as well taking on more than they would if supervised closely. Giving your employees more freedom and flexibility is also a great way to cater to the unique individuals that make up your teams. If you force everyone to work a certain way, that might be perfect for certain members of the team, but the absolute antithesis of working style for others. By increasing independence in the workplace, you encourage your employees to find their own way of working and thereby boost their motivation to work the way they want.
